FSR 2 February 2002, Cheshire to Florence and more

I just wanted to add a few more comments and share a couple of pictures that Dave and Jim missed.

The worst part of my trip was getting to Cheshire. The first indication that it would be bad was the phone call form Mike. He had gone into town early for the tree sale and called to tell me to be careful because it was really bad down there. The sun was poking through up here at 700 ft. I knew it would be going away soon.

I left Philomath a bit early hoping to get to Cheshire 15 minutes early. I headed south on 13th, took a left on Chapel and then a right on Bellfountain. It was pretty darn foggy and getting worse all the time. By the time I got to Airport Rd I had slowed to 40mph. I contemplated trying to go East toward 99 but thought I would continue south as far as Greenberry and turn there if it wasn't getting better. I still held hope that it would clear and I would be able to continue on through the curves of Bellfountain. Well, I got as far as Llewelyn and took a left in hopes of getting out of this *#$*&#$*&@ fog. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse. Ha. I was wiping the droplets off my shield every few second to confirn that I could see clearly. The inside of my shield was clear. I attribute this to the fact that the Schubert has more room in it out in front, so it doesn't fog as easy. Still, I could just barely see the road in front of me and I was down to a crawl. AH, a road! 99. Right or Left? Left and I ride right through what I had just come through and right maybe I would get to Cheshire sometime this afternoon. I went Right. Hope spring eternal, right? I made it as far as the Greenberry tavern and pulled off. What to do now? I waited, cleaned my face shield, and waited some more. I knew within the hour it would be a nice clear sunny riding kind of day. I waited some more and the sun started to glow through the fog. Ah, it is getting thinner. Let's try again. I was still wiping the little droplets off the front of my shield every few seconds but at least I could see a little ways in front of me now.

North of Monroe the sun had broken through. What a relief. The sunny warm riding day I imagined had finally arrived. I looked to the west and saw the fog hanging over the hills there. Kinda glad I wasn't on Bellfountain after all. I knew I wasn't going to make Cheshire on time. I was 5-10 minutes late and took a left towards the Dairy Mart just in case they were still there. To my suroprise there were several bikes- a yellow toy, a guzzi I don't remember seeing before, and the bike with the homemade tank mounted on the back. But where were the people? In the Dairy Mart getting warm and waiting for Jim to return.

The best part of my trip was riding North out of Florence and watching the view of the dunes develop in my left mirror, the sun sparkling on the waves with clear blue skies above and a warm coastal breeze. My thermometer showed 64 degrees at some point-- enhanced by the sun no doubt but warm nonetheless. Once we were able to pass the slow moving vehicles in front of us, I was able to concentrate on the road and enjoying the curves in the Oregon coast. What an awesome day!

Two pretty darn good looking bikes!
